Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about employee engagement, climate and culture surveys at DMSA.
An employee engagement survey measures how emotionally committed and motivated employees are — it focuses on how people feel about their work, their team, and the organisation. A culture survey looks deeper at the shared values, beliefs, and behaviours that define how your organisation actually operates day-to-day. A climate survey captures employees' perceptions of the current work environment at a specific point in time. DMSA designs surveys that can measure all three, either separately or in a combined instrument, depending on your organisation's needs.
A typical DMSA employee engagement survey takes between four and eight weeks from initial briefing to final report, depending on the size of your organisation and the complexity of the survey design. This includes questionnaire design and sign-off, online hosting and distribution, the fieldwork period (usually two to three weeks), data analysis, and delivery of your dashboard and executive report. We work to your timeline and can accommodate urgent turnarounds where needed.
Anonymity and confidentiality are central to how DMSA administers surveys. We host all surveys on a secure platform and never report results for any group of fewer than five respondents, which prevents individual identification. Survey links are distributed without personal identifiers attached to responses. Employees are informed of these protections before completing the survey, which significantly improves response rates and the honesty of answers. DMSA as the independent third-party administrator adds a further layer of trust for employees.
DMSA's Employee Survey Benchmark is a proprietary dataset built from over 28 years of conducting employee surveys across South African organisations. When we analyse your results, we compare your scores against this benchmark so you can see not just how your employees feel, but how that compares to other organisations in South Africa. This context is invaluable — it tells you whether a score of 65% on engagement is good, average, or below par for your industry. No other data analytics firm in South Africa offers this depth of local benchmarking.
Yes — the survey report is just the beginning. DMSA provides an interactive dashboard, an executive summary, and a detailed findings report with prioritised recommendations. We can also facilitate action planning workshops with your leadership team to help translate the data into concrete organisational interventions. Our Industrial Psychologists and Organisational Development consultants work alongside your HR team to ensure that insights lead to meaningful change, not just a report that sits on a shelf.
