Industry M&A research
Following the announcement of a merger, it is common practice for the merging organisations to conduct a Culture Fit Survey. Cultural fit is an important factor to consider when two organisations combine — a misalignment of cultures can quietly undermine even a well-structured financial and strategic deal.
Employees who do not understand or trust the 'why' behind a merger disengage, and that disengagement shows up in productivity, retention and customer experience long before it appears on a balance sheet. A structured Culture Fit Survey gives both parties a better understanding of each other's values, norms and ways of working — and provides leadership with an evidence base for where to invest change-management effort first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about M&A Culture Fit Surveys and how DMSA can help.
A Culture Fit Survey is a structured research tool that assesses the cultural compatibility of two organisations that are merging or being acquired. It measures how aligned the two organisations are across key cultural dimensions — including values, leadership style, communication, employee engagement, change readiness and ways of working. Research consistently shows that culture is one of the leading causes of M&A underperformance — with 50 to 70% of deals failing to meet their original objectives, and cultural incompatibility frequently cited as the primary reason. A Culture Fit Survey turns culture from an unmeasured risk into a data-driven input to the integration plan, giving leadership the evidence they need to prioritise change-management effort and build a unified combined organisation.
DMSA recommends conducting the Culture Fit Survey as soon as possible after the merger announcement — ideally before integration begins in earnest. This timing serves two purposes. First, it establishes a baseline of cultural data before integration activities begin to change employee attitudes and behaviours. Second, it allows leadership to use the findings to inform the integration plan from the outset rather than discovering cultural misalignments after they have already caused problems. A follow-up survey 12 to 18 months post-merger is also valuable — measuring whether integration efforts have brought the two cultures closer together and identifying any residual tensions that need to be addressed.
Anonymity is critical to the effectiveness of any Culture Fit Survey — employees who fear that their responses will be traced back to them will not give honest feedback, which renders the data unreliable. DMSA addresses this by acting as an independent third party throughout the process — individual responses are never seen by either organisation in a way that could be traced to specific employees. We apply minimum reporting thresholds to prevent identification, and our survey platform does not collect any personally identifiable information alongside responses. Employees are clearly informed of these protections in the survey communications before they participate, which significantly increases both response rates and the honesty of answers.
A typical DMSA Culture Fit Survey project runs from four to six weeks from initial scoping through to delivery of the report and executive presentation. This includes questionnaire design and sign-off (one to two weeks), survey fieldwork across both organisations (two to three weeks), data analysis and dashboard preparation (one week), and report writing and presentation preparation. The optional employee feedback sessions and action planning workshops are typically scheduled in the weeks following the main report delivery. DMSA will provide a clear project plan and timeline at the start of every engagement and can accommodate urgent timelines where the integration schedule requires a faster turnaround.
DMSA has been conducting organisational surveys since 1996 and has specific experience in Mergers & Acquisitions culture work — having conducted Culture Fit Surveys for major transactions including Britehouse & Dimension Data and Coca-Cola SABCO & ABI. Our multi-disciplinary team combines Industrial Psychologists, Statisticians and Data Scientists — ensuring that the survey is both psychologically grounded and statistically rigorous. Our DMSA Dashboard System provides an interactive comparison of the two organisations across all cultural dimensions, and our 28 years of benchmark data allows us to contextualise your results against a broad base of South African organisational survey data. We are based at Wits University and bring the academic rigour of a research institution to every engagement. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
